30 PM Job Summary Obtain and process microbiology specimens (maintaining positive specimen identification), assist Microbiology manager to maintain appropriate inventory, unpack supplies including media and performing the appropriate checks on the media in accordance with department policies and procedures.
Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise Language Ability - Ability to read and interpret documents such as patient requisitions, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Math Ability - Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished either verbally or written.
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Position Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure/Certifications) High School Diploma or equivalent 0 - 2 years' experience in a laboratory is preferred.
Lab Assistant I:
Good clerical, organizational and communication skills.
Basic knowledge of operating non-complex instrumentation.
Lab Assistant II:
Good clerical, organizational and communication skills.
Basic knowledge of operating non-complex instrumentation.
Competent in addressing department pending lists and finding missing specimens.
Successful performance in the Lab Assistant I position.
Demonstrate the ability to follow a series of steps without confusion or error.
Must have the ability to establish work priorities and to handle several tasks for maximum workstation efficiency.
Must be able to retain information once learned.
Must interact with other coworkers, internal and external customers with courtesy and respect.
Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities 1.
Interacts with physicians, employees and clients in a positive manner consistent with the mission and values of Bako Diagnostics.
2.
Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of all samples.
3.
Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.
4.
Prepare gram stains, performs appropriate checks on the strainer and runs daily QC slides.
5.
Plant all nails for mycology.
6.
Perform tissue grinding on appropriate specimens and add additional media according to specimen type.
7.
Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
8.
Perform all assigned clerical duties associated with the Microbiology laboratory.
9.
Perform distribution of cultures according to specific bench assignments.
10.
Resolve pending lists.
11.
Find missing samples.
12.
Decontaminate work areas.
13.
Ensure all safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.
14.
Use the laboratory computer system as well as operate PCs.
15.
Dispose of biohazardous material and chemical waste.
16.
Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations.
